If You Build It…

Build“Those who build have more to offer than those who tear things down.”

Dr. Madeleine Albright spoke these words as she addressed the GITEC audience during the morning keynote last week. A speech full of experience and witty jokes, this one statement held my attention.

Technology today is a constant race of innovation, so much so that the desire to be first may appear to outweigh the importance of being the best. While this makes for some interesting press conferences, tweets and outrageous claims, this is not what will let the tech industry continue to better the world in which we live. The race for “first” without consideration for quality will not help the global view of the United States or our national cyber security.

Now well into the second quarter of our year, we’re working to improve the bigger picture. We may have the most precise wireless detection (AirPatrol), we may have the fastest supercomputing analytics (LightMiner), we may be the golden standard for print advertising management (Shoom), but what’s really important is what we’re building through combined efforts. We are first to complete all in one mobile detection of Wi-Fi, cellular and Bluetooth, but we’re not racing to be first, we’re racing to be the best. The story we’re writing is something more than tweet worthy.

The future […]

Thanksgiving 2.0

phonetableThis past week is momentous each year for many reasons: Thanksgiving, travel woes, Black Friday sales, and Cyber Monday sales. However, some big name stores such as Nordstrom, TJ Maxx, and Barnes and Noble cancelled the Thanksgiving shopping tradition and closed on what used to be one of the biggest shopping days of the year; others such as REI took it a step further and were not only closed on Thursday, but also Friday.

You might be asking why this something I have found worthy of blogging about; after all, on the surface, it has nothing to do with technology.

These closures are important because they reflect a changing culture and, one could argue, that we’re trying to get back to some core values such as the importance of family. Culture shapes what is purchased and what is used, as well as what is created, as innovation must morph to match desires.

Again, what’s the technology aspect?

It’s huge.

The change of shopping habits in favor of spending more time with family for both store employees and customers has to reflect a growing opinion, and represent a message retail stores want to convey as part of their image. Shopping on Thanksgiving used to come first, sometimes at 5am, and family time would be scheduled around it. However, this shows a change of […]

Garbage in, Garbage out – The NFL and The Original Moneyball

“No one can ever replicate what the Cowboys did in the 1960s, they made it up right out of thin air.” – The Cowboys and the Indian

cowboysRecently, ESPN published a story and video about how a man made it in America. With a truly innovative idea, A. Salam Qureishi brought data analytics to sports, making the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys extremely successful.

A similar concept was showcased in the 2011 movie Moneyball starring Brad Pitt, but Salam employed it decades before in the 1960s to find otherwise unknown college football players with the highest probability of success in playing in the NFL. Assigning his own quantifiable values to individual characteristics of proven players, Salam started a new scouting system off of more than just hunches; Salam helped build America’s Favorite Team.

ESPN’s documentary features Salam, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Sysorex and former Sysorex CEO, various members of the Dallas Cowboys management team and Salam’s daughter, Lubna, who is also my wife.

Salam brought the power of big data and analytics to the Dallas Cowboys and, years later, to Sysorex. Today, Sysorex continues to utilize big data analytics to improve businesses and more around the world. With innovative and ground-breaking technologies such as AirPatrol (mobile location-based services) and LightMiner (light-speed analytics), Sysorex is working […]
